Sweet Korean Treats For Valentine's Day

Sweet Korean Treats For Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day is rearing its cupid’s bow, coming closer and closer, ready to attack any unknowing victim with an arrow straight to the heart. Oversized teddy bears built for cuddling have made their way to the aisles of stores while chocolate lines up right beside it. Whether you planned to show love to your significant other, your friends, family, or just yourself; here are some Korean desserts you can make at home!

Korean Watermelon Punch

Watermelon punch is one of the easier recipes on this list, and still just as delicious! It gives you many different options for the type of fruit or drink base you prefer, whether it be something fizzy and fun, like Sprite; or something filling, like a milk base. You could even do a mixture of the two! It only takes about ten minutes to put together, so it’s a quick and refreshing way to spend your Valentine’s Day.  To up the cute factor, you could even try cutting your fruit into heart shapes!

Hotteok

Hotteok, or Korean sweet pancakes, is a very popular choice of dessert, especially in the winter. It’s sweetness and easy-to-follow instructions also make it the perfect Valentine’s gift to surprise someone with! Similar to the way typical breakfast pancakes are made, the slight alterations to the preparation process won’t be jarring. You're also able to pick and choose your own filling based on your own taste preferences. So, if brown sugar isn’t your style, maybe try a jelly or Nutella!

Pepero Cake

This one has to be the cutest and most creative recipe on the list! Everyone knows that Pepero is the number one way to share a confession with someone. There’s even a whole day dedicated to the sweet treat that coincides with the idea of sharing affection towards the loved ones in your life. You can mix and match flavors of the Pepero border, and even (as you’ll see in the recipe) use a swiss roll as a placement for cake instead of making your own! Easy peasy.

Injeolmi Bingsu

The most difficult thing about this recipe is waiting until you’re finished to dig in! Injeolmi bingsu is a variation of patbingsu (a type of shaved ice) that replaces the shaved ice with milk Ice sorbet, but the delicious toppings of red bean paste, mini mochi rice cakes, grain powder, and almond flakes get to stay! Of course, you can also substitute any toppings out for ones that more closely fit your palate.

Strawberry Rice Cake

Another Korean classic getting a lovely twist! Strawberry rice cakes have actually become quite popularized because of the events like Valentine’s Day and White Day. For rice cake veterans, the addition of a strawberry will be very easy. For beginners, it may be a bit more tricky, but don’t let that deter you! The recipe down below comes with pictures that you can follow along to at your own pace. It’s the perfect little treat to present to someone to show you care, or as a way to remind to treat yourself from time to time.
