Daegu, the city of happiness and pride! They’re known for their rugged dialect and resilient people. Located in the North Gyeongsang province, this city has quite the taste. According to their official website, when it comes to their food the motto is spicy and savory taste or 대찬맛 (Dae-chan mat). So, let’s turn up the heat and jump into these Daegu dishes!

Daegu Yukgaejang/Ttarogukbap (spicy beef stew) (따로국밥)

Yukgaejang is stew that’s made of shredded beef and vegetables. It’s well known throughout Korea but in Daegu it’s done a little differently. They separate the soup and the rice. In fact, it’s the only place that does so! It’s not Daegu without the spice, but with this stew you can add chili powder to your liking. Make it a challenge, see how much you can take!

Dongin-dong Jjim galbi (spicy beef ribs) (매운갈비찜)

The food has an extremely specific origin as they were created in the “early 1970s on a residential street in Dongin-dong, Jung-gu.”, according to the Daegu City’s website. These ribs aren’t like the ones at your typical Korean barbecue! In Daegu, they’re packed with red chili powder and garlic! Try not to cry, these ribs will not go down without a fight.

Spicy Tteokbokki
