#SnackTalk with Rapper Jay 'Flowsik' Pak

Flowsik is exactly what his name suggests.

by James Bbang

The voice is instantly recognizable -- a husky, sometimes raspy baritone that spits lyrics in both Korean and English. His "sick flow" has an infinite combination of beats and rhythms, and his tracks never get old as you dig deeper into the layered messages that accompany them. For instance, latest single, “야, 너 (Yah, Nuh)” was a critical take on the modern hip hop industry. Flowsik challenged his fellow artists to remain true to their motives, rather than selling out – but it was just as much a challenge to himself, too.

Some of you also may recognize him as the rapper from the group Aziatix, which had a strong following in the States, but even more so in Asia. Aziatix featured Flowsik as the rapper alongside vocalists Nicky Lee and Eddie Shin. The group disbanded in August 2015, but Flowsik is still working hard in Korea.

Flowsik was in Los Angeles back in May as he was competing in the preliminaries for Show Me The Money 5. Did you happen to catch his performances? You can watch his prelims here, along with his first and second performances. flowsik We caught up with him at the SnackFever office as he munched on Korean snacks -- keep reading to find out which one's his favorite!

SnackFever: What are three words you would use to describe yourself?

Jay "Flowsik" Pak: Hmm...three words. I think I’m going to have to go with “fun.” I’m a guy who definitely likes to have fun. “Music” is another one, because that’s what all I’m about. And I’m going to have to go with “passion.” I’m passionate about what I do, which is why I’m still doing it.

What are your first thoughts when you wake up in the morning? The first thing is, “What do I eat?” I get very hungry in the morning. I love Korean food, so I just decide what I’m going to eat, and how I’m going to utilize that energy to move forward.

As a musician and artist, what has been the most rewarding experience for you? I’m going to have to go with the fans. The fact that fans from all over the world have enjoyed the music that I make, it’s a priceless gift. I’m very grateful for that. IMG_1688 Guess who's loving his customized SnackFever Deluxe Box?

What is the hardest thing you’ve done? Not giving up. Not quitting on your dreams.

Name someone who is important to you. My mother. She moved from Korea to America, she immigrated about 30 years ago and she really focused on my future. But she also allowed me to follow my dreams – she allowed me to do what I wanted to do, where my heart was at. And because of her, I am who I am today.

Any words you live by? Strictly passion. You’ve gotta follow your heart. There may be times in your life when you’re trying to do something, you’re trying to reach a goal, and there may be people who look at you; they may look at you like you’re a fool for trying to do it. But I think ultimately, if you follow your heart, you will ultimately be happy and satisfied with yourself.

Tops the only option nothing more nothing less

What music are you listening to right now? I listen to all sorts of music. I listen to everything, but right now I’m focusing on the songs that are on the top 100 billboard, and UK’s Top 40 charts. I like listening to just the songs that are hot right now because they change every month.

If you had a superpower, what would it be? I really like Superman, so I’m going to have to say, the power of flying, the ability to fly.

What are you OCD about? Oh man. I’d have to say, being a perfectionist. And that itself is good and bad, because I find myself stressing a lot because I want everything to be so perfect.

The most important question – what is your favorite Korean snack? Pepero, man! You already know! Pepero is like, it’s been around since day one. Especially the almond Peperos. I gotta eat that at least once a day! It’s so good.

What about your favorite and least favorite food? You know, I have a lot. But now, I’m going to have to say bibimbap. Why? Because it has all the veggies you need, the protein you need, you’ve got the carbs – it’s got everything. Least favorite – bossam. (Laughs)

What are some of your favorite hobbies? Besides working in the studio and making music, I’m going to have to say fishing. I love fishing, man. It’s time to reflect on yourself and enjoy the weather.
