Intro to Subak Hwachae 🍉

Light and refreshing, watermelons are the perfect fruit to snack on during a hot summer day. This tropical fruit can be found almost anywhere! It makes a popular item for different drinks and desserts all around the world including South Korea where the base for a popular drink called subak hwachae is born.

“Subak” means watermelon in Korean and “hwachae” is a traditional Korean punch.

Sounds delicious, right?

The original and simplest version of this watermelon punch consists of watermelon cut in cubes or scoops, then it’s mixed with some watermelon juice, sparkling lime soda, ice cubes, and usually some other fruit to deepen the flavor.

Recently, milk and sweetened milk have become a popular base for the punch as well. Even soju can be added to subak hwachae, making a staple for any summer party and probably your next favorite summer drink.

Many Korean cafes and restaurants offered subak hwachae as a seasonal drink but you can also make it at home with this simple recipe.
