2019 Wrap-Up: Big Hit's Big Year

2019 Wrap-Up: Big Hit's Big Year

Big Hit Entertainment has certainly grown over the past decade from producing BTS’ first EP in a small room to selling record-breaking world tours, and now achieving two all-kill daesang sweeps at the end-of-the-year awards! First, at the Melon Music Awards on November 30 and then later at the Mnet Asian Music Awards on December 4, BTS proved this was their year, winning nine awards in total. In addition to adding more trophies to their bag, the boys proved how skilled they are with their performances. Starting off with a throwback to “Boy In Luv” that left the audience in awe, RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook kicked off a medley of BTS discography at the MMAs.

At the MAMAs, BTS mesmerized the audience with a nearly thirty-minute-long performance that included older hits like “N.O” and “We Are Bulletproof PT. 2” alongside “Boy With Luv” and “Dionysus.” Filled with charm and armed with charmisia, they owned it! Their show-stopping performance led to “We Are Bulletproof PT. 2” charting on Melon for the first time since it’s release!

After the MAMAs, the group performed at the iHeartRadio Jingle Ball in Los Angeles on December 6, which in itself was amazing to watch as fans packed the venue with ARMY Bombs in tow; and they were awarded Variety’s Group of the Year at the private Hitmakers brunch the next day.

BTS has only grown in popularity since their first win for Best Album of the Year back in 2016 for The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever. They’ve put their blood, sweat, and tears into their careers, and that certainly has paid off as they are now the group with the most daesangs ever won! Along with winning at the 47th Annual American Music Awards, the Radio Disney Awards, 2019 VLIVE Awards, the Teen Choice Awards and various other award shows, they’ve managed to add over ninety awards to their bag this year!

It doesn’t just stop there for Big Hit: TOMORROW X TOGETHER, their junior group that debuted in March, also won Rookie of the Year at both the MMAs and MAMAs; facing stiff competition from other monster rookie groups like AB61X and ATEEZ. Performing The Dream Chapter: MAGIC’s “New Rules” and “Run Away” at the Melon Music Awards, TXT showed off their artistry in a mixture of acting and dancing — these rookies are definitely talented!

Their performance at the MAMAs revolved more around “Run Away” with the introductory dance blending into the start of the song. Huening Kai, the youngest member, even had a dance solo during the outro, leading to a hint for their next comeback. Big Hit is known for leaving clues for upcoming concepts during award show performances. That, and their worldbuilding skills, sets them apart from many other companies. You never know what’s up their sleeves, but one thing that’s certain is Soobin, Yeonjun, Beomgyu, Taehyun, and Huening Kai are just getting started!

2019 was also the year Big Hit acquired Source Music, thus bringing girl group GFriend to the Big Hit family! SinB, Yuju, Eunha, Yerin, Sowon, and Umji are no strangers to the spotlight: Since their debut in 2015, they have hits like “Fever,” “Sunrise,” “Me Gustas Tu,” and “Vacation.” Their latest comeback, “Fallin’ Light,” was a Japanese release featuring their classic mystical sound and airy dance moves. No matter the language, they pull off their concept well. It’s no wonder that they won Best 3 New Artist (Asia) at the Japan Golden Disc Awards

Their hard work also got them Best Female Group at the 33rd Golden Disk Awards this year, Best Dance Performance at the Seoul Music Awards, and Artist of the Year at the Fact Music Awards

Congratulations to all the groups and all the nominees!

With end-of-the-year nominations still rolling in, you can catch BTS, TXT, and GFriend all at the SBS Gayo Daejeon on Christmas Day and the 2019 KBS Song Festival (Gayo Daechukje) on December 27.
