13 Underrated Songs in K-Music to Add to Your Playlist Today! 🎶
Many of us gained our interest in Korean culture through the entertainment and pop culture of South Korea, especially through exposure to K-Pop. With the rising popularity of K-Pop all over the world, we have chosen to educate ourselves more on a country that is not our home to better understand the music we have come to love.
As it is all over the world, especially prevalent in American pop music, there are always genres of music, celebrities, and groups that get the most attention and achieve great popularity while some are often overlooked, despite their talent and efforts.
Like the hipsters that we are, the Fever Fam have selected some of our favourite songs that we deem to be both cool and underrated! Check out our picks and afterwards, leave us yours!
- G.Soul - "Where Do We Go From Here" ("우리 이젠 어디로") - Selected by Team Lead, Ash
“I am a complete lover of R&B and soul music; ... When I discovered G.Soul, I was elated. I'm still waiting for Kyungsoo to make an R&B album, and when that day comes, I'm going to be losing my mind.”
- Lee Hi - World Tour (비행) feat. Mino of WINNER - Selected by Intern Lead, Angela
“Great, positive vibes, good beat, good feel, and good artists! Lee Hi’s jazzy tone in this R&B/Pop tune really blends with Mino’s unique voice.”
- Hyolyn (효린) - "Dally" ("달리"), feat. Gray - Selected by Intern, Britt Franklin
“‘Dally’ is only one of a handful of fun songs that would be a no-brainer to recommend from former Sistar member Hyolyn, but it’s likely the most well-known track she’s released in the past year, whether from the buzz surrounding the music video or the catchiness of the single itself. What’s great about Hyolyn is her style ranges from the sensual R&B/hip-hop infused sound in ‘Dally,’ to summery pop as heard in ‘Bae’ and ‘See Sea,’ to complementing low-key acoustic arrangements with skillfully light vocals in songs like ‘To Do List.’ While ‘Dally’ is the single being highlighted here, don’t hesitate to check out more songs from this talented singer-songwriter. You’ll find something to suit any mood!”
- UNB - "감각" ("Feeling") and SOYA (소야) - "Artist" - Selected by Intern, Kaitlin Clifford
“I put two songs because I really love both of these songs, and I feel both are underrated. However, I feel ‘Artist’ more so because I stumbled across this song one day and Soya is REALLY good but no one seems to be talking about her even though she’s really talented.”
- Kim Soo Hyun - "The One and Only You" from The Moon that Embraces the Sun -Selected by Intern, Kalina Ewing
“Kim Soo Hyun is known for his acting, but his singing makes you melt as well. He should be better know for singing as well.”
- Epik High (에픽하이) - "Umbrella," feat. Younha (우산) - Selected by Intern, Kyle Voong
“It’s a really beautiful song that’s able to merge Younha’s amazing vocals with equally entertaining rap verses of the Epik High members. I absolutely love the song, but I don’t see it being recognized often.”
- U-KISS (유키스) - "Standing Still" - Selected by Intern, MatchaLexie
“It's a true bop that you can blare in the car while singing your heart out. That and Soohyun's vocal skills in general are always underrated.”
- SF9 (에스에프나인) - "Midnight Road" - Selected by Intern, Nicole.Jasmine
“This song is an actual tune! I don’t know, correct me if I'm wrong, but I just never seemed to hear people hyping it? But it's so good. 100% recommend!”
- BLACK6IX (블랙식스) - "Please" (제발) - Selected by Intern, Samantha Hazard
“I just like the song a lot and no one ever talks about them.”
- 안녕의 온도 Temperature of Saying "Hi" - 겨울로 가기 위해 사는 밤 (feat. 황득경 of 노티스노트) - Selected by Intern, Stephanie
“It’s a good song to listen to on a rainy night. It’s from the OST of Age of Youth. Some may recognize this song if they are also fans of the K-drama Age of Youth a.k.a. Hello, My Twenties!, which you can watch on Netflix right now if you’re looking for a new binge.”
- WOODZ - "Different" - Selected by Intern, Tiffany Simms
And, last but not least, my picks! I must confess, I am obsessed with this song! When I finally got Spotify this year (don’t judge me), I was looking at the various playlists they were suggesting and I saw this one titled, Sexiest K-Grooves. Although the title made me nervous, I decided to check it out and it was all good! It is a lot of Korean R&B that I had never heard before. I recognized a couple of names, like Dean and Jay Park; but for the most part, it was a lot of underrated music, songs, and artists. WOODZ’s song “Different” became my favourite and now I can’t go a day without listening to it. It’s groovy, it’s fun, it’s smooth, it’s perfect, then the music video is extremely aesthetic. It is just everything I love. Plus, we can all relate to the lyrics of the song.
- Eric Nam (에릭남) - "Honestly…" ("솔직히") - Selected by Intern, Tiffany Simms
Former After School Club host, Eric Nam is incredibly underrated. Originally from Atlanta, GA, he can also speak four languages, English, Korean, Spanish, and Mandarin. He helps to cross any language and culture barriers one might initially have when entering the world of K-Pop. That, and his music is fantastic! Not only is he quite charming, his vocals are amazing and he is also a songwriter! I absolutely love his latest EP Honestly, and the title track and its music video are my favourite. It’s upbeat and colourful! The music video’s Mexico location has gorgeous scenery showcased.
As you can see, there are lots of talent that is still left to be discovered in the Korean music scene beyond the K-Pop that we see on our YouTube “Trending” page.
